Important facts about Chottanikkar Bagavathi Temple

Chottaikkar Bagavathi is one of the most popular temples in Kerala where people with mental illness visits to get cured. This temple is situated 8km away from Thripoonithura (it’s a suburb near Kochi). The temple puja starts from 5 am in the morning with Lord Shiva Dhaara and ends with evening Guruthi around 8:45 pm. But men can only enter the temple by removing their shirts while women must wear salwar suits or sarees.

What you can find in the Chottanikkar Bagavathy Temple?

Being one of the oldest temples in Kerala, the shrine is fully dedicated to Mother Goddess who is worshiped in the form of Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Durga. They are worshiped in morning, afternoon and evening respectively. 

While you enter, there are two main temples located here. The first one you will notice while you enter is the temple of Rajarajeswari. The next temple is known as Keezhekavu, where you will find the deity of Bhadra Kali. In Rajarajeswari temple goddess Saraswati is worshiped while in the other temple the other form of the goddess is worshiped.  Another notable thing about the temple is that all the deities are enshrined on the bed of sand.

Chottanikkar Bagavathy Temple History

The Puranas tell that this temple was located once in a dense forest because a tribal called Kannappan wanted to sacrifice his daughter’s cow. But his daughter wanted Kannappan to sacrifice her instead of the cow and the next day the cow turned into stone. After that, it was believed that Kannappan daughter was an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi. After this Lord Vishnu appeared to Kannappan and decided to be in the temple and in this way Lord Vishnu is also worshipped in the temple. Kumbam a major festival is celebrated in this temple, where people believes that goddess comes out of the temple and bless all.
